Name Palakkad is said to have derived from Tamil words Palai (barrenland) and Kad (Forest). Palakkad a border district with an area of 4480 Sq.Kms is the biggest district of Kerala. Palakkad gap in the Western Ghats stretching up to 32 Kms is the biggest gate way of Kerala to rest of India and the World. Blue Mountains with green paddy fields outlined by palm trees contribute beauty to the landscape.
Palakkad the granary of Kerala is irrigated by Malampuzha, Walayar, Mangalam, Gayathri, Chittur, Meenkara, Pothundy and Kanhirappuzha dams. Bharathapuzha (Nila), the second longest river of Kerala with its tributaries waters the entire district. It has also got a forest area of 372.104 Sq.Kms.
Eastern part of the District has got an extension of the black soil of the deccan plateau so much so it is good for cotton, sugar cane, ground nut cultivation. Tamil is a minority language in this District. Influence of Tamil is seen in the language and culture of the District.
